As the landscape of talent acquisition and management evolves, it is imperative for PE execs to adapt and innovate. Welcome to the Value Creation Summit Interview Series! In this insightful discussion, we delve into the strategies and challenges surrounding talent management in private equity with our esteemed speaker Kate Migliaro, Global Head of Portfolio Talent at Searchlight Capital Partners.

Q: What are the top challenges you face when looking to bring on board the best people for your portco management teams?

The top challenge to bringing the best people on board is stakeholder alignment. Oftentimes, deal teams, operations teams, and management teams have disparate agendas and different opinions on what and who they need to execute the deal thesis/value creation plan. Building a scorecard and agreeing to the ‘jobs needed to be done’ can help reduce some of the continued debate on the right archetype for the role but does not eliminate the natural bias when acquiring talent.

Q: How are you using Talent as a value-creation lever in your work today?

My talent framework has three core competencies that drive value creation:
  1. Talent management – building boards and management teams aligned to the value at stake.
  2. Organizational effectiveness – articulating vision, defining culture, and structure and building alignment around a set of defined outcomes. This core competency also includes org and comp design.
  3. Human Capital Design – advancing human capital processes driven by technology advancements and sustainable social impact.

Q: How is the changing shape of work (remote working, etc.) impacting the role of Talent professionals in the PE landscape?

The changing shape of work demands increased attention to culture and leadership development.  Talent professionals increasingly play a broader role in driving conversations around these critical topics which requires the talent professional to evolve their playbook from traditional talent functionality to broader leadership competencies.
